Per lunghissimo uso, da molti secoli gli arcivescovi di Ravenna portano il titolo nobiliare di Principe, l'origine del quale, per fondata sentenza, deriva dal fatto che tra gli antichi domini, goduti da quegli arcivescovi, si aveva pure una giurisdizione così detta di "mero e misto impero" cioè il diritto di far leggi e di farle eseguire, ed esercitata su ventisei fra terre, castelli e villaggi che formavano quel che si diceva il "Visconte" del quale mercato Saraceno, luogo che è ora in prov. di Forlì era la capitale. Il Viscontado, che nel secolo XVIII durava ancora, fu prima ma soppresso dalla rivoluzione francese, ed ebbe fine col motu proprio di Pio VII nel 1816. cessò così tale sovranità ma rimase il titolo di Principe usato sempre dagli arcivescovi ravennati. Questo storico diritto è provato dai seguenti documenti: Diploma in data 16 aprile 1160 dell'imperatore Federico I all'arcivescovo Guido di Blandrata,
