Pare che questa famiglia provenga da Napoli, donde sarebbero emigrati a Firenze in epoca remotissima. E' fuor di dubbio che più tardi una famiglia di questo nome fiorì per lungo tempo a Bologna, ove nel 1279 figura fra quelle di parte lambertazza. Resta infatti memoria d'un Nicola di Ghinozzo, anziano pel quartiere di porta Ravegnana nel 1361, e di sua sorella Aichina, moglie d'Aimerico da Sant'Alberto; di diversi altri anziani nello stesso secolo e nei due successivi; di Gio. Battista e di Gio. Maria, lettori nello Studio, il primo dal 1490 al `95 e il secondo dal 1515 al `18; infine d'alcuni notai e privati cittadini dei secoli XV e XVI. Non sarebbe possibile dire fra costoro e i membri di Ferrara esista o no qualche nesso agnatizio; l'arma però è la medesima.
