Famiglia antica oriunda da Tronzano nel Vercellese, la quale partecipò nel consortile nobile di Vintebbio. Le prime memorie sicure ci ricordano un Giacomo, il quale era dottore di leggi, e viveva a metà del secolo XV. Suo figlio Giovanni fu podestà di Tronzone e di Moncrivello. Ebbe costui due figli Antonio e Stefano, entrambi notai. Da Stefano discesero Carlo Giovanni e Carlo Francesco. Quest'ultimo è lo stipite della linea di Gifflenga, essendo stato infeudato l'8 luglio 1722 e investito il 27 settembre di questo feudo con il titolo signorile; feudo che venne eretto in titolo comitale a favore del suo nipote Carlo Francesco (defunto Vercelli, 30 dicembre 1817), di Alessandro, il 17 agosto 1772. Questo ramo ebbe termine con suo figlio Alessandro (nato Vercelli, 19 ottobre 1774), che fu ufficiale del Regno italico, quindi tenente generale sardo. Era stato creato cavaliere dell'Impero francese il 15 gennaio 1809 e successivamente
