Apelido de uso antigo e de origem religiosa, isto é derivado da devoção aos Reis Magos, muito frequente no Século XVII mas já usada na centúria anterior, continuando a utilizar-se bastante também nas seguintes. No século XVII, sobretudo, os que em baptismo recebiam os nomes de Belchior dos Reis, Gaspar dos Reis e Baltasar dos Reis eram numerosos e em muitas famílias se viam os três postos em irmãos, os quais ,posteriormente, transmitiam Reis aos respectivos filhos e netos já como apelido, assim se formando várias famílias deste apelido. Uma delas foi a de João José dos Reis, nascido a 11 de Maio de 1820, em São Salvador de Matosinhos, que foi do Conselho de Sua Majestade, Fidalgo Cavaleiro da Casa Real, Comendador da Ordem de Cristo de Portugal e do Brasil e de Nossa Senhora da Conceição de Vila Viçosa, Cavaleiro da Imperial Ordem da Rosa, etc. 1º
