La famiglia Greppi è originaria di Cazzano di Valeriana nella provincia di Bergamo. Antonio (1722-1799), figlio di Gabriele, si portò a Milano, e, presa in appalto con alcuni soci nel 1750 la Ferma Generale, s'arricchì in tal modo grandemente così che i vasti commerci e le operazioni finanziarie negoziate coi maggiori governi d'Europa lo misero in possesso di una ingente fortuna, che lo indicava fra i più ricchi proprietari in vari Stati italiani. Acquistò in Milano il grandioso palazzo in contrada di S. Antonio, già dei Lurani e lo ampliò notevolmente; è tuttora posseduto dalla famiglia. Nel 1756 fu ammesso alla cittadinanza milanese, e, divenuto consigliere del Magistrato Camerale, con diploma imperiale 19 ottobre 1778 ottenne il titolo comitale con trasmissione primogeniale mascolina appoggiato sul feudo di Bussero e Corneliano; nel 1780 fu pure insignito della commenda di S.
