Sconosciuta è la provenienza della famiglia, che riteniamo presente in Tortona già nel XII sec. poiché uno dei suoi membri assunge nel 1225 al consolato: è ovvio quindi godesse da tempo prestigio, stima e fosse dotata di copiose dovizie; in detto anno i consoli Folco Rosano e Otto R. riconciliano nobiltà e popolo concedendo a quest'ultimo l'ammissione al consolato cui allora accedeva solo il ceto nobile; ... De R. non meglio identificato, ma con tutta probabilità lo stesso Otto, era uno dei consoli che il 25 marzo 1229 presiedettero all'assemblea del popolo radunato nella cattedrale di Tortona ove si pronunciò sentenza di eslio e di confisca dei beni contro gli eretici; a giudice del sacro palazzo in Tortona venne creato nell'anno 1255 Lanfranco R. ed a notaio del medesimo, Manuele Garofoli. O R. sono inclusi nell'elenco delle famiglie nobili fiorenti nell'anno 1293 a Tortona pubblicato poi a Mialno nel 1503
