Famiglia antica, oriunda da Sospello, le cui memorie risalgono al secolo XIV, la quale già nei tempi remoti venne illustrata da egregi personaggi. Ad essa appartenne Pietro, di Paolo e di Maria Borgondi, il quale ebbe dal prefetto Andrea Valchieri in dono nel 1711 porzioni di Castelnuovo. Suo figlio Giuseppe (nato 26 giugno 1704, defunto 8 marzo 1782), che fu avvocato dei poveri a Nizza (1740) e successivamente prefetto in detta città (1768), fu investito di Castelnuovo il 6 dicembre 1736 col titolo signorile e fu infeudato des Ferres, acquistato dai Balbo Simeoni, e investito col titolo baronale il 20 febbraio 1756. Suo figlio Pietro (nato 7 dicembre 1739, defunto 27 dicembre 1807) fu sostituto avvocato dei poveri (1768) e procuratore generale del Commercio presso il Consolato di Nizza (1774). Da lui nacque Giuseppe Pio (nato Nizza Marittima, 5 maggio 17767, defunto 20 febbraio 1819) che dalle sue nozze
