Questa famiglia vuolsi originaria di Firenze, dove godette per 14 volte il gonfalonierato e dette più di cinquanta priori. Già signora di Canapaja, rocca presso Firenze, si distinse nel secolo XIV con un messer Rosso, che tenne Lucca per i fiorentini, congiurò contro il duca di Atene costringendolo a rendere la libertà a Firenze, per la qual cosa egli divenne capo della Repubblica. Sconfitto da Barnabò Visconti, fu costretto a fuggire dalla patria. I perugini lo vollero loro capitano ed i romani lo nominarono senatore nel 1363. La famiglia, si divise in parecchi rami, uno dei quali si trasferì a Montepulciano e quindi a Roma. Furono conservatori di Roma: Giovanni (1427), Bernardino (1480), Mariano (1531), Giulio (1552), Antonio (1692), Giovanni (1720). Giovanni da Montepulciano, fu maestro di casa del cardinale del Monte, prese l'abito ecclesiastico, divenne chierico di camera ed andò in Francia, Spagna e Portogallo con missioni delicatissime. Il
