Illustre, storica, antichissima fam. tribunizia veneziana, che si presume di origine romana e storicamente nota in Venezia dal 706, quando Lorenzo era primicerio della chiesa di Olivolo o Castello. Bartolomeo nel 1049 fu procuratore di S. Marco e così pure Marino nel 1124; Giacomo nel 1218 fu podestà di Costantinopoli, nel 1220 duca di Candia, nel 1229 fu eletto doge di Venezia; Lorenzo, suo figlio, fu podestà di Veglia, di Padova e di Fermo, e, nel 1270 anch'egli fu elevato al soglio dogale. Già sino d'allora la fam., potentissima, aveva stretto legami di parentela con potenti case sovrane. Un Fratello del doge Lorenzo, Pietro, comandante la flotta veneta, sconfisse in Puglia quella di Federico II; fu poi creato podestà di Milano, ove fu fatto prigioniero dallo stesso Federico che lo fece trucidare; Giovanni, altro fratello, fu principe di Ossero; Giacomo, nipote del doge Lorenzo, fu pure duca di Candia e
