La famiglia R. è antica e nobile in San Sepolcro e vanta illustri guerrieri e prodi capitani, nonchè cavalieri dell'I M. O. di S. Stefano di Toscana. Ne fu capostipite un Rigo, vivente nel 1202. Gnano pugnò prima per Ranuccio Farnese, e poi passò al servizio del conte Giovanni Sforza d'Aragona, il quale lo creò cavaliere aurato nel 1503: Passato quindi al servizio della Repubblica Veneta, gli venne affidata la custodia delle Bocche di Cattaro. Cosimo, capitano al servizio di Ferdinando II granduca di Toscana nella guerra contro urbano VIII, si segnalò per le sue prodezze nel 1643 nella presa di Città della Pieve, di Monteleone, di Castiglion del Lago, di Montegiovino, Niccolò fu governatore di Rimini. Domenico, figlio di Francesco e di Leonella Pichi, stabilì la sua famiglia a Cagli nel 1750 quando sposò Anna Maria Luperti di nobile famiglia di Cagli, donde la attuale famiglia Rigi-Luperti.
