Antigua y muy noble familia boloñesa, de clara y ancestral virtud, que se ha extendido a lo largo de los siglos en diversas regiones de Italia. El origen de este apellido, según genealogistas autorizados, debe buscarse en una modificación hipocorística de la aféresis del nombre "Arrigo", que probablemente perteneció a un progenitor ahora desconocido.
