Questa famiglia detta pure Riitano, Regitano e Retano è originaria della città di Vittoria in Biscaglia. Passò in Sicilia nel secolo XIV dove edificò la terra di Reytano e fu ascritta al patriziato di Plermo ed a quello di Messina, dalla quale città un ramo passò in Reggio di Calabria. Ha vestito l'abito di Malta nel 1643. Il ramo nobile di Palermo si estinse nel 1844 nel Duca Giuseppe Reytano e nel suo fratello Francesco morti senza lasciar discendenti. Ebbero una sola sorella, Marianna, maritata ne' colonna Marchesi di Parcoreale. Veggonsi Monumenti in Messina nella Chiesa di Gesù e Maria. La famiglia Reytani ha posseduti i feudi di Acireale, Donnamaria, Moriella e Quintopantano; i Marchesati di Camporotondo nel 1668 e Gallidoro nel 1632; il Ducato di Reytano ed il Principato di S. Pietro nel 1648. Contrasse parentele con le famigllie Abendagno, Busacca, Carvalos e molt'altre che per brevità si tralasciano.
