Famiglia della quale si trovano antiche memorie nella città di Capua. Nel 1547 Giuseppe ottenne la qualifica di regio familiare ed il riconoscimento dello stemma gentilizio. Nel 1624 Rinaldo fu decorato da re Filippo III del titolo di conte, e nel 1791 Lorenzo seniore, del titolo di marchese da re Ferdinando IV. Fu ricevuta nell'Ordine di Malta nel 1797. Per successione Spinelli è stata riconosciuta nei seguenti titoli: principe di Cariati (1565), duca di Castrovillari (1526), principe di Montacuto, duca di Seminara, marchese dec. Lorenzo, di Giuseppe, di Lorenzo, e Margherita Spinelli, principessa di Cariati, padre detto marchese Lorenzo, dell'attuale rappresentante della famiglia, e del principe Fabio caduto in Libia nel 1914.
