Famiglia assai antica ed illustre, originaria di Bologna. Giorgio Rippo, fu membro del Consiglio degli anziani della Repubblica di Genova nel 1406; Giovanni Rippo, ebbe cura dello stato regio nel tumulto seguito nel 1411; Girolamo Rippo, macellaio, fu l'arbitro fra nobili e popolani nella discordia per le avarie nel 1445, Francesco Rippo, macellaio, esiliato dai Francesi come fazioso, passò agli stipendi di Massimiliano Imperatore. Nel 1528 furono ascritti alla nobiltà di Genova, ed aggregati all'albero Spinola. Poche sono le città, che vantano famiglie nobili così antiche come quelle in Genova, poiché, malgrado le vicende dei tempi, essa conta ancora nel suo seno molte famiglie che provano la loro genealogia da padre in figlio, attraverso gli atti notarili dalla metà del XII secolo fino ai giorni nostri, vale a dire da un'epoca che serva di barriera a quasi tutte le famiglie d'Europa.
