Antichissimo casato, il quale, al dir di illustri genealogisti, discende dalla nobile famiglia Vitali. Un membro di quest'ultima, infatti, entrando nel sacerdozio, sarebbe stato chiamato "pré Vitali", e con tale cognome, in seguito, si denominarono i suoi congiunti. In ogni modo, da alcuni testi araldici, emerge che i Ritali erano ascritta al Patriziato di Messina ed investiti delle baronie feudali di Foresto e delle Gabelle; inoltre, fino al 1473 ,appartennero al Senato di detta città. In seguito le memorie dei Ritali si perdono a Messina ma ricompaiono, a distanza di anni, in Bergamo, attraverso la gloria del celebre pittore Andrea (Berbenno, c. 1480 - Bergamo, 1528). Questi preferì seguire la maniera di Raffaello e del Vinci che quella del Bellini, dal quale apprese la divina arte di dipingere le madonne. L'Accademia di Belle arti di Venezia conserva di questo artista la "Fuga in Egitto", già esistente nella Scuola dei Varotteri
