In Mantova furono due famiglia Riva; la più antica godè prima ancora dei famosi Bonaccolsi Vicarii Imperiali, la maggior preponderanza in questa città, verso quindi la metà del XIII secolo. Il suo nome poi figura ancora tra le più potenti famiglie aderenti all'atto di elezione a Capitano del Popolo di Luigi Gonzaga (1328). comunque questa illustre famiglia al dire del Castelli (Origine e descendenza nell'antichissima e Nobilissima Famiglia de' Signori Riva di Mantova, Osanna, 1650) e lo racconta un contemporaneo, si estinse la famosa peste manzoniana del 1630. Gli attuali Marchesi Riva non discendono però dal ceppo, sia perchè l'arma da loro usata ab immemorabili è assai diversa, sia perchè la suddetta esplicita dichiarazione del contemporaneo Castelli, concorda anche con varii altri autori forestieri e mantovani come il Gionta, il Volta, che dimostrano infodata ogni possiblie discendeza. Del resto anche la famiglia Riva, che tuttora fiorisce, è pur di esima
