Una antigua leyenda hace descender a los de este linaje de un Infante gallego hermano de la Reina doña Lupa de Galicia. Ese Infante, que era ciego, tenía presos a dos discípulos del Apóstol Santiago a quienes visitaba una doncella que se convirtió al cristianismo porque en sus visitas a los prisioneros había observado que aparecían nimbados de una misteriosa claridad. Segura la doncella de lo milagroso de aquella luz, conveció al Infante para que acudiese ante los presos y evitase el martirio a que iban a someterles en un determinado lugar del río Neira (Lugo). Hízolo así el Infante, acaeciendo entonces el milagro de que recobra la vista al tiempo que aparecía ante sus ojos una cruz cargada de cinco veneras. De este suceso y de la unión de las palabras "ribera" y "Neira", deduce la leyenda que se derivó el apellido y también su escudo de armas.
