La famiglia è una delle più antiche del patriziato genovese, trovandosi memoria dal principio del secolo XII. Nel 1164 un Guglielmo risulta creditore di Barisone, re di Sardegna. Un Ugolino viene ricordato fra gli esperti navigatori prima della fine del secolo XIII. Percivalle, fu anziano della repubblica di Genova nel 1408, ed uno dei riformatori delle leggi nel 1413. Girolamo, fu eletto doge nel 1558. La linea tuttora fiorente discende da Giovanni Maria (n. 20 gennaio 1632, dec. luglio 1705), il quale fu fatto marchese di Trivigno in Basilicata, con diploma di Filippo IV, re di Spagna, 2 maggio 1662. Egli sposò il 16 marzo 1666 la marchesa Settimia Maria Pasqua e suo figlio Giuseppe Maria (n. 12 agosto 1671, dec. 4 settembre 1718), fu il primo ad unire al proprio cognome Pasqua. Don Giuseppe e Don Giuseppe Maria intervennero nella qualità di nobili al parlamento generale tenuto a Cagliari
