Tra le più nobili e antiche famiglie della città di Bergamo, conosciuta come Rivolo o Rivola, di origine spagnola, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia e del mondo. Prese forse il nome da una piccola ripa situata ai confini delle tre vicinie di S. Lorenzo, di S. Pancrazio e di S. Michele dell’Arco, e ricordata nei più antichi statuti. I primi personaggi di cui abbiamo notizia sono Daiberto, Atto, Berardo, Mazuco e Belfante, fiorenti nel 1200. Da Belfante prese denominazione un castello situato sulla collina di S. Michele del Pozzo Bianco verso Pignolo, dove si ridusse a salvamento il vescovo Giovanni nel 1296 quando gli venne incendiato l’episcopio; la denominazione passò poi al baluardo sorto sopra le rovine di quello nel 1561.
