The famous Luca, inventor of a glazed paint to cover the earth cooked in a furnace, belonged to this family, born in Florence in 1388 and died about the middle of the XV century. His sons and nephews continued the manufacture of the terra cotta painted with the method left by the talented master. The family died in Lorenzo della Robbia Bishop of Fiesole, who died in 1645, and the Viviani were heirs. Numerous authors of the family described events and characters, attributed various origins to it without any valid attestation. Modern historical criticism has, on the safe basis of the documents, accounted for the artificial genealogical reconstructions of those writers who, out of complacent spirit of flattery, claimed to have this family descended from noble and ancient prosapias like that of other families.
