Habiendo desempeñado durante un tiempo el cargo de provincial de la Compañía en Nápoles, regresó a Roma para ocupar cargos importantes en la curia, fue nombrado cardenal y, poco después, arzobispo de Capua; constituía este nombramiento una manera de alejar de Roma el jesuita, en el momento en que controversia sobre la gracia se hallaba en plena ebullición. Muerto Clemente VIII, Roberto pudo volver a Roma, donde desplegó una gran actividad como político, teólogo oficial de la Iglesia y escritor
