Many writers believe this family of Norman origin, although I remember this surname since 954 in Salerno, on the occasion of the transfer of the body of the Apostle St. Matthew from the destroyed city of Pesto to Salerno. Feudatory since the thirteenth century, it enjoyed nobility in Salerno, where it was so numerous that it had its own seat called the de Ruggiero; and then it was ascribed to the seats of Campo and Porta Retese. Chiara for luster and power under Norman domination, she remained so and always took part in the most important events of the city of Salerno, enjoying the patriciate, in the Porta Retese seat, until recently; so that, when the seats were abolished, it was registered in the Register of Closed Squares. He also enjoyed nobility in Bitonto. The branch of the Laurenzana barons became extinct in Giulia de Ruggiero, married to the nob.
