Ancor prima del mille sulla destra dell'Ossona tra Carbonara e Cerreto ergevasi su un'altura delle colline del Tortonese un castello detto Romagnano dal quale lo sguardo si posaava vigilante sulla sottostante villa l'uno e l'altra compresi nel Comitato di Tortona il tutto denoninato poi Villaromagnano; era feudo della mensa vescovile ed i castellani del luogo ne assunsero il nome onorando gli omonimi marchesi di Romagnano (Sesia) conti di Pollenzo e Santa Vittoria cancellieri dei Savoia. Non si esclude siano stati i primi abitanti, probabillmente qualche gruppo superstite della colonia romana a dare il nome al luogo ove esisteva un monastero che domina Teberga, testando, benifica nel IX secolo; il 6 gennaio 999 l'abate di S. Marziano di Tortona concede a livello per 29 anni ad Adelberto prete e suo fragello Erenzone figli del fu Giovanni la terza parte delle case e dei beni del monastero di Romagnano coll'obbligo di
