Questo monastero è antichissimo, già menzionato nel secolo VIII e più volte ricordato nel Libro Pontificale. E' vicino alla chiesa di Tre Fontane, già detta "Ad Acqua Salvis", luogo ove l'apostolo delle genti, San Paolo, venne decapitano, chiesa che dovette sorgere ai tempo di Costantino. Il fondo faceva parte della Massa di Acqua Salvis che fu proprietà di San Gregorio Magno (590-603) e da lui donato alla basilica di San Paolo, affinchè con le sue rendite provvedesse alla spesa delle lampade. La fondazione della chiesa dedicata ai Santi Vincenzo ed Anastasio e quella del convento abazia si attribuiscono a papa Onorio I e risalirebbero al 625. Adriano I circa il 722 la restaurò, come scrive Riccardo monavo clumacenze; Leone III nel 796 fece rifare la chiesa dalle fondamenta. E' provato da documenti, di cui conservano copie autentiche, che Carlo Magno imperatore nel 805 donò all'Abazia metà di Orbetello ed Anzitonia,
