Antica ed assai nobile famiglia di origine francese, originariamente conosciuta come de Romain, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatosi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni del Belgio, dell'Austria e d'Italia. Il casato rinviene dunque la sua culla nell'antica provincia d'Anjou, più precisamente in Montreuil-Bellay. Esso fu confermato nella sua avita nobiltà nel 1743, in persona di Jeton, sindaco di Angers dal 1743 al 1747, e ricevette anche il titolo comitale nel 1825. Un suo ramo era però anteriormente passato in Belgio, ove parimenti godette nobiltà, ed ivi il cognome fu mutato in Romenel. Agli albori del secolo nono, dal Belgio un ramo passò in Austria e da lì nel Settentrione d'Italia, ove il cognome mutò ancora, sino ad assumere l'attuale forma Romanel. In Italia i principali nuclei del casato si rinvengono in Veneto ed in Lombardia ed i suoi rappresentanti si sono spesso distinti per virtù ed erudizione. Dai
