La famiglia è delle più antiche e cospicue della nobiltà reggiana. I più antichi personaggi, che si conoscono, di questa famiglia, sono: un sacerdote Lanfranco che, nel 1052, fece donazione di un terreno in S. Tommaso della Fossa (Prov. di Reggio E.) al celebre monastero benedettino di S. Prospero; e così pure fecero Alberto ed Ugizio, fratelli da Fontanella Gualdrata Giugali fecero anch'essi donazione al detto monastero di una chiesetta nella stessa Villa di S. Tommaso della Fossa. Armanno, vivente nel 1155 fu procuratore del monastero di S. Pietro. Raimondo viveva nel 1155 in Villa S. Prospero de' Strinati, Comune di Reggio E. Felicita, badessa al monastero del Fontanellis (poi di S. Chiara) fondò nel 1186 la chiesa di S. Nicolò in Reggio Emilia. Queste le più antiche notizie che si hanno di questa famiglia. Dal sec. Nel secondo e terzo di Fontanelli, che è di rosso alla banda scaccata d'argento e di nero a tre file, accostata da quattro quadrifogli d'argento; alla croce bandata d'argento e di nero sulla inquartatura; e sul tutto dell'Impero, cioè d'oro all'aquila bicipite di nero, coronata all'imperiale, colla bordura composta d'argento e di nero. (Riconosciuto con D.M. 6 novembre 1900). Cimiero: Un'aquila di nero, uscente, coronata. Ornamenti: Corona ducale per speciale concessione. Motto: Disce pati, vincere si vis.
