Antico casato, che contò rami illustri, ed ebbe origine nei Comitati Savona, Acqui, Asti, Monferrato, con centro in Savona città Marittima e precisamente in quelli delle Langhe Liguri della marca aleramica che, come le altre due marche, la obertenga e la arduinica, constava di vaste regioni poste al confine del Regno italico a difesa dell'Impero, in modo che il loro limite meridionale fosse il mare ligustico. Il Biorci (vol. II, pag. 299 e seguenti), scrisse: "Li troviamo fin dal 1290 vassalli della Repubblica Genovese e come tali investiti in feudo nobile, retto e gentile del castello di Ponzone, Spigno ed il suo mandamento: Cioè Montaldo, Trupino, Rocchetta, Malvicini, Serole e Merana: ai quali luoghi si aggiunse poi quello di Piana, che i marchesi di Ponzone ebbero in feudo dall'abate di San Quintino". così pure il Casalis ("Dizionario dei Regi Stati"), il quale aggiunse (vo.
