Antica ed assai nobile famiglia spagnola, originariamente conosciuta come Rossell, passata a risiedere in Palermo e poi in Messina nel XV secolo, e propagatasi poi, nel susseguirsi dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia e del Mondo. Giunta in Sicilia ebbe il feudo Nixima. D'altronde, tal famiglia, nel dispiegarsi dei lustri, sempre è riuscita a produrre una serie di uomini che resero illustre il suo nome, nei pubblici impieghi, nelle professioni liberali ed ecclesiastiche e nel servizio militare. Fra questi, senza nulla levar al valore degli omessi, contasi: Leone, il quale fu senatore in Palermo negli anni 1627-28 e capitano di giustizia in detta città nel 1629-30; Francesco, il quale fu senatore in Palermo nell’anno 1629-30; Antonio, che tenne la stessa carica nel 1633-34 e tale carica tennero un Francesco negli anni 1675-76, 1718-19, un Guglielmo nel 1740-41 ed un Raffaele nel 1771-72; Girolamo, cavaliere, fiorente in Messina, nel 1682; Niccolò,
