Di origine longobarda, ebbe dominio di molti castelli nei territori di Siena e di Volterra, e si trova a Firenze fin da' tempi i più remoti, e vi ebbe case, torri e loggia. Tre furono consoli: Jacopo nel 1176, Gherardo nel 1197 e Beringhieri nel 1204, e tre conseguirono il priorato: Arrigo di Boccaccio nel 1285, Lionetto di Benedetto nel 1496, e Noferi di Piero nel 1513. Furono seguaci di parte guelfa ed ebbero coi Guelfi comuni rovesci, esilio e trionfi. Sui campi di Montaperto combatterono valorosamente Fornajo di Beringhieri distringitore e consigliere, Stoldo, suo fratello, alfiere dei soldati d'Otranto, Marzoppino di Ormanno e Tone di Fornairo; questi due ultimi appartenevano al corpo dei Feditori. Molti sono gli uomini illustri di questa casa, de' quali son da notare uno Stoldo di Beringhieri il quale, essendo podestà di Arezzo nel 1258 e guidando le milizie aretine, aggiunse a quel dominio la
