La famiglia è di origine correggese. Non si è potuto accertare come al primo cognome aggiungesse quello di Foglia; certo per matrimonio o per disposizione ereditaria. Da documenti dell'Archivio di Correggio si ha notizia di un Pietro, che era convittore nel collegio di Reggio nel 1781. Fino a quell'anno si trova menzionato col solo cognome di R., poi nel 1792 figura con entrambi i cognomi. Fu egli, ed allora, che unì per primo quel secondo cognome? O non erano esatti i documenti anteriori che, parlando di lui, lo indicarono col solo cognome di Rossi? La famiglia Foglia è di antica origine, proveniente da Fosdondo in territorio di Correggio. Una prima notizia si ha di un Giannino Folli o Fogli di Fosdondo nel secolo XV. Suo figlio Pederzolo viveva nel 1448. In seguito la famiglia si divise in due rami, uno rismasto a Fosdondo, l'altro trasferitosi a S. Tommaso di Bagnolo.
