Familia antigua y muy poderosa, tomó su apellido del castillo del mismo nombre, ubicado en el lado de las colinas a la izquierda del arroyo Serchia. En el siglo XIII, los miembros de esta familia construyeron la puerta de la ciudad de Módena llamada S. Giovanni-Battista, de la que también eran guardianes y defensores.
