Illustre famille originaire du Mugello, anciennement connue sous le nom de da Monte Giovi, da Campestri et da Ghireto, du nom des lieux où elle possédait ses possessions. Dans l'ancien code de l'archevêché florentin, appelé Bullettone, on lit que Rota, de Brunetto, vendit en 1222 à l'évêque de Florence "omnes terras, domos fideles, possessiones et jura quae habebat in Castro de Rezano et Montegufone et Castro ice cream " ; d'où l'on peut déduire que les Roti, comme les autres nobles de la campagne, avaient jusqu'à ce moment exercé une sorte de seigneurie sur les places vendues. Dans le même code, nous lisons également qu'en 1323 R., di Scherano, di Rota, devint le seigneur féodal de l'évêque susmentionné pour certaines propriétés situées à Bracciolatico, près de Campestri, une localité où la villa de la famille existe toujours.
