Dal Ghilini trascriviamo la prima notizia reperita sui B.: "nel 1168 nuclei di detta famiglia si trasferirono da Genova sul suolo alessandrino per fondarvi la città"; nel capoluogo ligure infatti erano dediti alla mercatura per esercitare la quale nel 1250 richiesero ed ottennero dal Consiglio degli anziani facoltà di esercizio sia in Genova che nel territorio della repubblica. Dilagarono a dritta e a manca dell'arteria che univa i due centri radicando i loro penati a Spineta, Bosco , Montechiaro, Acqui, Alba, Voghera, Tortona, Castelnuovo, Volpedo, Capriata, Pozzolo Formigaro, Novi quando ancora i marchesi Del Bosco e di Monferrato se ne disputavano il dominio; i secoli estinsero i rami meno fecondi lasciandone altri qua e là tuttora fiorenti e qui ricordati. In Genova, Giovanni Botacius è teste in atto del 28 gennaio 1191 ove il marchese Azzone del Bosco conferma una permuta di beni fatta da sua madre Anna Maria; il
