I primi accenni sul casato risalgono ad un documento del 1189 nel quale un Obertus De Crota il 20 giugno appare come teste nella sentenza emanata dal messo dell'imperatore Federico I e suo figlio a favore del monastero di S. Maria Teodota di Pavia in merito a terre alienate illegalmente dalla badessa Doda; in altra sentenza, relativa a decime, pronunciata il 16 giugno 1216 dagli arbitri eletti dalla Chiesa di Tortona e dal monastero di S. Stefano è ricordato Pietro Croti (Carte Capit., I, 322); Robaldo Crotto il 3 giugno 1219 è condannato dal console di giustizia di Tortona in una causa vertente col Capitolo tortonese (id., 351); ad Alessandria il consigliere ... Crottus, non meglio identificato, partecipa alla seduta del 14 maggio 1227 in cui podestà e Consiglio della città eleggono gli arbitri da inviare a Milano per conoscere e comporre le divergenze insorte con Asti e Genova.
