Famiglia piemontese di antica e nobile tradizione propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. La cognominizzazione è anteriore al XVI secolo, delle sue origini non vi sono notizie certe, l'ipotesi più accreditata e che siano discendenti del Cardinale Rovano, su cui è tuttora in corso una disputa storica tra chi sostiene che fu G. della Grolaye de Villiers, abate di san Dionigi, ambasciatore in Roma di Carlo VIII morto nel 1499, originario di Rovano in Normandia e chi sostiene che fu il Cardinale D'Amboese, creato nel 1498, detto Cardinale Roano ma prevalentemente trascritto Rovano, probabilmente per errori di scrittura. Rovano è anche un nome proprio medioevale, probabilmente derivato da uno dei summenzionati Cardinali, ed anche un termine per indicare i cavalli dal manto grigio. I nomi dei Rovano sono ricordati prevalentemente in atti notarili e contratti di vendita di terre e case fin da tempi assai remoti,
