Família piemontesa de tradição antiga e nobre espalhada ao longo dos séculos em diferentes regiões da Itália. A cognominação é anterior ao século XVI, de suas origens, não há certas informações, as hipóteses mais reconhecidas e que são descendentes do cardeal Rovano, sobre o qual ainda existe uma disputa histórica entre aqueles que afirmam ser G. della Grolaye de Villiers , abade de San Dionigi, embaixador em Roma de Carlos VIII que morreu em 1499, originalmente de Rovano na Normandia e que afirma ser o cardeal D'Amboese, criado em 1498, chamado cardeal Roano, mas principalmente transcrito Rovano, provavelmente por erros de escrita. Rovano também é um nome próprio medieval, provavelmente derivado de um dos cardeais mencionados acima, e também um termo para indicar os cavalos de pelagem cinza.
