Antica famiglia dell'Umbria con residenza nella città di Gubbio. L'origine dei conti Bovarelli di Gubbio rimonta al XIII secolo, in cui un Bovarello era podestà di Gubbio nel 1216, ed un Guido sosteneva la stessa carica nel 1231. I fratelli Giuseppe e Livio, vissuti sui primi del XVII secolo, furono, il primo uditore di Rota di Genova a Bologna, e l'altro consigliere del Duca di Toscana. Si estinse verso la fine di detto secolo colla morte dei due fratelli Giulio (1667) e Settimo (1693), entrambi cavalieri dell'ordine di Santo Stefano di Toscana, ordine fondato da Cosimo I de' Medici il 15 marzo del 1562, ad imitazione di quello Gerosolimitano, col duplice scopo di difendere nel Mar Tirreno il commercio d'Italia dalle piraterie barbaresche, e di liberare i Cristiani dalla schiavitù della potenza ottomana.
