Famiglia cagliaritana di origine genovese le cui notizie risalgono al secolo XVIII. Avevano interessi nelle peschiere e nella tonnara di Capo Malfatano; alla fine del secolo la famiglia si divise in due rami con i figli di un Francesco: dall'avvocato Luigi discese quello che ottenne il cavalierato ereditario e la nobiltà nel 1842 con i fratelli Luigi e Francesco. Da Michele capitano del porto di Cagliari che ottenne il cavalierato ereditario e la nobità nel 1838 discese l'altro ramo. Altro ramo. Antica e nobile famiglia della Liguria fregiata del titolo di Conti di Castelvecchio. Altro ramo. Con diplomi in data 10 marzo 1828 Carlo Alberto, re di Sardegna, concedeva la maggiore generale nell'Esercito e capitano del Porto di Cagliari, Michele Novaro, con trasmissibilità nei suoi figli e discendenti maschi, i titoli di cavaliere e di nobile, in considerazione dei servizi resi dallo stesso Don Michele allo Stato e delle benemerenze
