La tradizione mantenutasi per secoli nella famiglia vuole che i suoi membri discendano da Ruballa, castello o fortilizio nel territorio dell'Antella. Di qui passarono poi in Firenze, dove Ricordano Malispini gli enumera tra le famiglie che nel 1215 divennero guelfe. In Firenze la famiglia si ingrandì rapidamente: sulla fine del dugento vi avevano torre, loggia e strada, indici sicuri di famiglia illustre e potente. Poi vennero gli acquisti nel contado: il castello di Gavignano con le ville e beni circonvincini e il patronato delle chiese ivi esistenti comperato nel 1313, i castelli di Vernio e di Mangona acquistati dai cont'Alberti nel 1332, e quello di Pozzo presso Dicomano dai conti Guidi nel 1337. Vero è che la Repubblica, li obbligò a vendere al comune prima il castello di Mangona (1340) e poi anche quello di Pozzo (1375), in modo che non rimase loro che il castello di Vernio, nel
