Questa illustre e fiera stirpe feudale, che da antico tempo signoreggiò su Chitignano, Rosina, Taena, Sargiana ed altri castelli della montagna aretina, ed estense il suo dominio sino a Pietrolina e Sovaia in Romagna, fu dapprima ostinatamente avversa ai guelfi e a Firenze, in danno della quale aveva violentemente usurpato il castello di Cennina. Poscia, pei buoni uffici dei perugini, il vescovo d'Arezzo, Buoso, e suo fratello conte Franceshino, s'indussero a restituirlo alla Repubblica Fiorentina, e furono perciò compresi nella pace di Sarzana del 28 marzo 1353 fra i Comuni della Lega Guelfa dell'Italia Centrale ed i ghibellini seguaci dell'Arcivescovo di Milano Giovanni Visconti. Il 7 ag. 1365 furono ricevuti in accomandiglia perpetua della signoria di Firenze, che il 5 nov. 1384 rinnovò gli amichevoli accordi con loro.
