Antigua y muy noble familia siciliana, de origen francés, que se ha extendido a lo largo de los siglos en diversas regiones de Europa y el mundo. Según lo que informa Mugnos, de hecho, el progenitor de la familia Rubino sería un Aliprando, caballero de Lyon, que floreció en 1114. El origen de esta cognominación, según genealogistas autorizados, debe buscarse en el personal medieval "Rubinus", aunque también es posible una derivación de la aféresis del nombre "Cherubino". En cualquier caso, la familia llegó a Sicilia con un Piermaria, en la época del Rey Martín y la Reina Blanca, con el cargo de "maestro racional de la Cámara Real".
