Le prime notizie documentate su questa famiglia cominciano con un Alamanno ricordato in più atti, e detto "l'Oricellario" per la sua fortunata scoperta che, nei suoi viaggi all'estero per ragion di commercio, aveva fatta dell'erba "rusca" o "oricella", i cui succhi abilmente manipolati con altre sostanze aveva saputo applicare con successo alla colorazione in violetto dei panni di sua produzione ritraendone cospicui guadagni. Da quel soprannome i suoi discendenti adesunsero la cognominazione di "Oricellaj", che poi nell'uso idvenne "de' R.". Da Giunta, secondogenito di lui, rammentato in un istrumento del 1263, nacque Bernardo, detto "Naddo", che fu il primo di sua gente ad ottener le supreme magistrature della repubblica, il priorato cioè nel 1304 e il gonfalonierato di Giustizia nel 1308. Da Bingeri (o Belinghieri), uno dei suoi sedici figli, che fu caloroso guerriero e per gli aiuti portati ai senesi ne ottenne ilpriivlegio di poter unire al suo stemma
