Non esistono famiglie che siano in grado di documentare la loro discendenza dal patriziato dell'antica Roma; ma se alcune di esse possono con qualche fondamento di verità, trovasi certamente, ed in prima linea, la grande casata dei R., che vediamo già nei secoli X e XI potentissima e quasi sovrana delle Calabria. Tale è appunto l'opinione di gran parte degli storici e dei genealogisti, secondo i quali i R. sarebbero derivati dalla "Gens Rufa". Sarebbero passati dapprima in Oriente, ai tempi di Costantino il Grande, e quindi, dopo preclare imprese militari e dopo aver dato due imperatrici a Bisanzio (Berenice, moglie dell'imperatore Basilio II, e Jole o Jolante, moglie dell'imperatore Andronico Giovanni Comneno) sarebbero venuti in Calabria con un Giovanni Fulconio R., ivi inviato a governare in nome dell'imperatore d'Oriente.
