Família antiga da nobreza de Salerno, que se acredita ser de origem normanda e considerada por alguns autores como o sangue dos Guiscards, conforme relatado por Candida. Um ramo da família Ruggio se estabeleceu na França e se dizia Rouge. Atribuído ao Patriziato de Salerno, no Seggio di Campo, e ao Patriziato de Trani, para os quais a abolição dos assentos foi atribuída ao Registro de praças fechadas. Recebido no SMO de Malta no Priorado em 1598 em pessoa do cav. Matteo, tendo feito a pruova por seu antepassado Francesco, nobre de Salerno do Seggio di Campo, e passado no convento em 1776 com o cavaleiro Gerardo, para prova de consanguinidade com o referido cav. Matteo. Este último morreu lutando contra os infiéis. Nicola foi abade de Montecassino em 1480 e Benedetto o embaixador de Ferrante d'Aragona na República de Veneza.
