Antichissimo casato detto Roggiero o Ruggiero, che la leggenda vorrebbe di origine normanna, sebbene di questo cognome si trovi ricordo sin dal 954 in Salerno, ossia dalla occasione della traslazione del corpo dell'Apostolo S. Matteo, dalla distrutta città di Pesto a Salerno. Feudataria dal secolo XIII, godette nobiltà in Salerno, ove era così numerosa che ebbe un proprio seggio detto dei Ruggiero; e poi fu ascritta ai seggi di Campo e di Porta Retese. Chiara, per lustro e potenza sotto la dominazione normanna, si conservò tale e prese sempre parte alle più importanti vicende della città di Salerno, godendone il patriziato, nel seggio di Porta Retese, fino agli ultimi tempi; così che, all'abolizione dei Sedili, fu ascritta al Registro delle Piazze Chiuse. Godette pure nobiltà in Bitonto. Il ramo dei baroni di Laurenzana si estinse in Giulia Ruggiero, maritata al nob. Alfonso Gaetani, patrizio napoletano. Ricevuta in Priorato nell'Ordine Gerosolimitano
