Antiguo linaje italiano, llamado Ruggiero o Roggiero, que la leyenda quisiera de origen normando, aunque recuerdo este apellido desde 954 en Salerno, es decir, con ocasión de la traducción del cuerpo del apóstol San Mateo, de la ciudad destruida de Pesto a Salerno Feudatorio desde el siglo XIII, esta familia disfrutaba de nobleza en Salerno, donde era tan numerosa que tenía su propio asiento llamado dei Ruggiero; y luego fue adscrita a los asientos de Campo y Porta Retese. Chiara, por su prestigio y poder bajo el dominio normando, permaneció así y siempre participó en los eventos más importantes de la ciudad de Salerno, disfrutando del patriciado, en el asiento de Porta Retese, hasta hace poco; de modo que, cuando se abolieron los asientos, se inscribió en el Registro de Plazas Cerradas.
