Famille italienne très ancienne, appelée Ruggiero ou Roggiero, que la légende aurait d'origine normande, bien que ce nom de famille soit rappelé depuis 954 à Salerne, c'est-à-dire depuis l'occasion de la translation du corps de l'apôtre saint Matthieu, de la ville détruite de Pesto à Salerne. Feudataire dès le XIIIe siècle, cette famille jouissait de la noblesse à Salerne, où elle était si nombreuse qu'elle avait son propre siège appelé la famille Ruggiero ; puis il a été attribué aux sièges de Campo et Porta Retese. Chiara, pour son éclat et son pouvoir sous la domination normande, l'est restée et a toujours participé aux événements les plus importants de la ville de Salerne, jouissant du patriciat, au siège de Porta Retese, jusqu'à ces derniers temps ; de sorte que, lorsque les sièges ont été supprimés, il a été inscrit au registre des places fermées. Il a également apprécié la noblesse
