Questa famiglia, alcuni autori la dicono di Pisa discesa dalla Gualandi; altri la credono venuta da Cremona, trovandosi tra le antiche di quella cittá, ed altri la ritengono venuta da Milano; imperocché, tra gli ostaggi presi dallo Imperatore Federico II nel Milanese e dati in consegna ai Baroni napoletani, si leggono Princivalle ed Oberto di Somma. I piú peró la vogliono originata da un Nicola celebre giureconsulto ai tempi dei Re Carlo II e Roberto d'Angió, il quale per essere della terra di Somma presso il Monte Vesuvio, fu detto di Somma, nome che consevarono i suoi discendenti. Né a parer nostro sarebbe improbabile che il Nicola appartenesse alla famiglia Spinelli la quale era sovente detta semplicemente de Summa per aver feudi presso quella cittá. Questa famiglia ha goduto nobiltá in Napoli al Seggio di Capuana perlocché trovasi ascritta al Libro d'Oro, ed in Catanzaro. Quest'ultimo ramo si estinse. De'
