Famiglia originaria di Ravello nella costiera di Amalfi. Se ne ha notizie nel 1179 con un Sergio che edificò parte del Duomo di Ravello e fece costruire le magnifiche porte di bronzo dove si vedono le sue armi. Venuta in Napoli, la famiglia fu aggregata al Seggio di Montagna. Venne ricevuta nel Sovrano Militare Ordine di Malta dal 1637 come quarto della famiglia Piscicello; nel 1643 e 1644 come quarto della famiglia Albertini. Venne decorata dei titoli di Principe di Leporano dal 1624 e di Conte di Picerno dal 1724 e, per successione della casa del Balzo, del titolo di Duca di Schiavi con anzianità del 1681. Ebbe il Grandato di Spagna in persona di Francesco Principe di Leporano. Il ramo feudatario di Spezzano in Calabria ottenne il titolo di Duca sulla detta terra con Regio Privilegio 20 novembre 1633 in persona di Marco Antonio; acquistata la terra di Molinara,
