Sulla origine di questa famiglia molto e lungamente si è disputato dagli scrittori di cose storiche e genealogiche di Perugia e d'Italia; chi volendola derivare da Enrico imperatore, che da un SODDU conte in Terra di Lavoro e chi dall'Ungheria, senza che dall'abbondantissima letteratura sull'argomento possano trarsi prove attendibili in favore dell'una o dell'altra opinione. Più probabile, e più universalmente accettata, è la derivazione germanica di questa stirpe, che sarebbe venuta a stabilirsi in Perugia coll'imperatore Federico I di Svevia sulla fine del secolo XII. Certo è che già sullo scorcio del XIII se ne trova preciso ricordo negli Annali Decemvirali del Comune Perugino, dove alcuni Degli SODDU figurano tra i maggiorenti della città, come un Gualfreduccio consigliere e ambasciatore nel 1276, e un SODDU podestà di Foligno in quell'anno e nel 1288 procuratore e sindaco per trattare con due cardinali la pace fra Perugia Foligno.
